Naming this blog

January 29, 2011 . Srikanth Meenakshi

Coming up with a name for your blog is a painful task. We thought long and hard about what to call this blog. I have a page full of suggested names, combinations, themes, suffixes, prefixes etc. that kept us entertained for a while.

Finally, I decided to call it what you see above – “Marketplace”. This is the name of the daily market commentary program broadcast by national public radio (NPR) in US. I used to listen to it every day at 6:30 PM. A beautiful opening music preceded a very informative half-hour analysis of all things that happened in the stock market and the industry during the day. Although it was carried by NPR, a very straight-laced media establishment, this program did not take itself too seriously. There was a certain self-awareness in the makers of the program. They realized that although they were covering the quotidian minutiae of the markets, not much of it mattered in the long run from a historical perspective.

Naming this blog after that program is our way of acknowledging that attitude as well as my way of doing an homage to the program that educated me a lot.

So, there you go, that is the reason this blog is named “Marketplace”.

BTW, here is a link to NPR’s Marketplace page – http://marketplace.publicradio.org/
