The organic foods segment is being restructured from a wholesale model to direct-to-retail CPG distribution in Europe, taking segment EBITDA margin to 4% from 10%, and is guided to exit FY27 at 7-8% with segment EBITDA of ₹70-80 crore and a return to double-digit margins by FY28. The US tariff has reset from 50% to 10%, supporting sequential gross margin recovery during the quarter, and duty refunds partly received have not been recognised as income. Freight costs in Europe and the Middle East, where rates moved from US$ 200 to US$ 4,000, are expected to be partly passed on over coming quarters. The core basmati and speciality rice segment, at 90% of revenue, held its EBITDA margin at 13% through the period. As these drags unwind, management expects normalised EBITDA margin to be restored above 12%, supporting earnings growth ahead of revenue growth.

Branded conversion to drive India growth without share gains – Basmati remains largely unbranded in India, allowing LT Foods to grow by converting loose-basmati households to branded packs rather than competing for share within the branded market. DAAWAT is the second largest basmati brand in the country, with household penetration at 64.4 lakh (Kantar MAT March 2026), up 22.8% YoY and from 45.6 lakh at MAT 2023, market share of 23.1% (MAT June 2026) and a 40%-plus share across e-commerce platforms. India revenue grew 19% YoY in Q1FY27 on 1,09,000 tonnes of volume and contributes 29% of the revenue mix, with profit having grown faster than revenue over the last three years. Management’s FY30 ambition is to more than double India revenue with expanding margins, driven by presence across consumer price points, outlet expansion, premiumisation and extension into adjacent categories using the existing brand and distribution network.

US leadership to convert price-led growth into volume growth – North America contributed 50% of Q1FY27 revenue and grew 49% YoY, or 27% on a normalised basis, though the increase was driven largely by commodity inflation and the US duty rather than volumes, with segment volume growth at 11%. Royal holds over 60% of US basmati imports and Golden Star, now wholly owned, is the No.1 jasmine rice brand in a market around three times the size of basmati; both categories are growing 5-10% and LT Foods is growing ahead of the category. As tariff-led pricing normalises, this positioning is expected to convert dollar growth into unit growth. The jasmine business also operates on a working capital cycle of around 120 days against a longer cycle in basmati, making the mix shift accretive to capital efficiency, while the US ready-to-heat facility becoming operational this quarter on doubled capacity adds a higher-margin growth avenue.

Q1FY27 – Growth was broad-based across segments and geographies, with revenue up 26% YoY and 19% on a normalised basis including Golden Star in the base quarter. The gross margin compression is largely optical, reflecting a change in shipment terms with a US subsidiary from CIF to C&I basis that moves freight out of other expenses, while the EBITDA margin decline is attributable to the restructuring of the organic segment. Below EBITDA, depreciation rose to ₹74 crore on capitalisation of assets and finance costs to ₹40 crore on supplier funding used to shorten the working capital cycle, holding PAT growth to 9%. Sequentially the trend is stronger, with revenue up 8%, EBITDA up 21% and PAT up 35% as the US tariff reset flowed through.

FY26 – Reported growth of 26% overstates the underlying trend: normalised revenue growth was around 19% and normalised gross margin about 35.3%, the difference being the US tariff pass-through, which inflates both revenue and cost without earning a margin, alongside a 7-8% YoY increase in paddy prices. The margin decline was deliberate, reflecting a two-fold step-up in India brand investment and digitalisation spending, the UK business being in its investment phase and organic being in remodelling. Basmati and other speciality rice, at 88% of revenue, grew 29% (21% normalised) to ₹9,742 crore at a 12.3% normalised segment EBITDA margin, while working capital days improved to 176 from 196 and operating cash flow nearly doubled to ₹911 crore.

Financial Performance – The 3-year revenue and net profit CAGRs stand at around 16% and 14% respectively for the FY23-26 period, against 5-year CAGRs of 18% and 17%. The Indian food processing industry accounts for 32% of the country’s total food market and reached US$ 354.5 billion in FY24, while agricultural and processed food exports touched US$ 49.4 billion in 2024-25, with processed food’s share rising to 20.4% from 13.7% in 2014-15. Channel mix is shifting quickly: modern trade is growing at 19.5%, e-commerce accounts for 17% of overall FMCG consumption among evolved buyers, and FY25 saw 50-100% YoY growth for FMCG companies on quick-commerce platforms.

Growth Drivers

Rising incomes and household penetration in branded staples: India’s GDP per capita rose to US$ 2,675.32 in 2025 and is forecast at US$ 2,812.62 in 2026, while the Indian FMCG market is expected to compound at 11% on higher per capita consumption and improving retail reach. Rural India, at more than 38% of FMCG sales, led affordable-premium consumption in 2025 with a 51% volume share, a mix shift that favours branded, premium-positioned rice over loose supply.

Quick commerce and modern trade reshaping distribution: India’s e-commerce market, valued at US$ 125 billion in 2024, is estimated to reach US$ 345 billion by 2030, while quick commerce is scaling at over 100% YoY GMV growth across more than 5,000 dark stores against a US$ 45 billion addressable market that is only about 7% penetrated. FMCG companies recorded 50-100% YoY growth on quick-commerce platforms in FY25, and e-commerce is projected to contribute 11% of Indian FMCG sales by 2030.

Export tailwinds and easing trade frictions: India’s agricultural and processed food exports touched US$ 49.4 billion in 2024-25, supported by the ₹10,900 crore PLI scheme for food processing, which reimburses up to 50% of overseas branding and marketing costs. For branded rice exporters the frictions of the past year are unwinding: the US tariff has reset from 50% to 10%, and the countervailing duty on Ecopure’s organic soyabean meal exports to the US was revised down from 340% to 75%, with the company having filed an appeal.

Peer Analysis

The company’s peer set includes KRBL Ltd, AWL Agri Business Ltd, etc.

LT Foods is the most internationally diversified player in the peer set, with 71% of Q1FY27 revenue earned outside India and leadership in both basmati and jasmine rice in the United States, against KRBL’s more domestically weighted India Gate franchise and AWL Agri Business’s edible-oil-led staples portfolio. That mix supports a branded, farm-to-fork model with an FY26 gross margin of around 34% and ROCE of about 20% on a light balance sheet, with net debt/EBITDA of 0.48x at June 2026. Reported margins are currently absorbing the US tariff pass-through, a two-fold step-up in India brand spending and the remodelling of the organic business, leaving room for recovery towards management’s normalised EBITDA margin target of over 12%.

Outlook

Management has guided to double-digit revenue growth with normalised EBITDA margins restored above 12% and ROCE scaling towards 23%-plus over the medium term, and has stated that the quarter is in line with its annual estimates. Segment guidance is explicit: basmati and other speciality rice at 10-12%, ready-to-heat and ready-to-cook at 15-20% and organic at 10-12%. The convenience portfolio is the fastest-moving piece, with the US ready-to-heat facility becoming operational this quarter on doubled capacity, a target of doubling RTH revenue over three years and breakeven guided at ₹400 crore of segment revenue. Organic is expected to improve every quarter through the restructuring, exiting FY27 at a 7-8% EBITDA margin and returning to double-digit growth and margins by FY28. Europe and the UK remain in an investment phase, with capacity, cost structure and channel mix being built out and profitability expected over the medium term, while the Middle East – a saturated market the company has worked for 15 years – is guided to grow at around 15% off a small base by playing selectively in the premium and mid segments.
