Without all-time highs, markets cannot grow and generate returns<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For <strong>any asset class that is expected to grow over the long run, it is inevitable that there will be several all-time highs during the journey <\/strong>as seen below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fundsindia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Nifty-50-slide-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"438\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fundsindia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Nifty-50-slide-2-1024x438.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28564\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fundsindia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Nifty-50-slide-2-1024x438.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.fundsindia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Nifty-50-slide-2-300x128.png 300w, https:\/\/www.fundsindia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Nifty-50-slide-2-768x328.png 768w, https:\/\/www.fundsindia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Nifty-50-slide-2.png 1118w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If you expect Indian equities to grow at say <strong>12% per annum<\/strong> (in line with your earnings growth or GDP&nbsp; growth expectation), then mathematically it means the index will <strong>roughly double <\/strong>in the <strong>next 6 years<\/strong>, become <strong>4X i<\/strong>n the<strong> next 12 years<\/strong>, and<strong> 10X <\/strong>in the<strong> next 20 years.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, the index will <strong>inevitably have to hit and surpass several all-time highs over time if it has to grow as per your expectation.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So there\u2019s nothing special or frightening about all-time highs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color:#0b5394\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Insight 2: Equity Markets tend to break out and rally sharply after a few repeated patterns of &#8220;all-time highs followed by a fall&#8221; to reach higher all-time highs.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There have been <strong>frequent phases<\/strong> in the <strong>past <\/strong>where the Indian stock market gets <strong>stuck <\/strong>in a <strong>range<\/strong> for a while and <strong>tends <\/strong>to <strong>fall every time <\/strong>it hits an<strong> all-time high.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During such phases a lot of<strong> investors <\/strong>get <strong>frustrated <\/strong>and start to assume that every all-time high will lead to a market decline. But that&#8217;s not always the case.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Over time, however, after a period of stagnation the market eventually breaks out, surpasses the previous levels, continues to grow, and reaches a new all-time high.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let us see how this works\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><br>Flashback 1: Between 2008 and 2011, Nifty 50 was stuck at 6,000 levels for some time\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.fundsindia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/4-1.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>As seen above, the <strong>Nifty 50 between 2008 and 2010<\/strong> <strong>hit all-time high levels <\/strong>around 6,000 levels<strong> two times<\/strong> in Jan-08 and Nov-10.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:#980000\" class=\"has-inline-color\">In both instances, Nifty 50 fell 60% and 28%<\/span><\/strong> after that.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Again in 2014, the market hit all-time high levels<\/strong>, and a lot of investors were already scarred by what happened in the previous two instances and assumed this would lead to another large fall.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2026 and then came the surprise &#8211; Nifty went up by a whopping 73% and went on to hit new all-time highs!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.fundsindia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/5-1.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Flashback 2: Between 2018 and 2020, Nifty 50 was stuck at 12,000 levels for some time\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.fundsindia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/6-1.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>As seen above, the Nifty 50 between 2018 and 2020 hit all-time high levels (around 12,000 levels) three times in Aug-18, Jun-19, and Nov-19. In these instances, Nifty 50 fell 15%, 12% and 38% after that.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Again in Nov-2020, the market hit the same all-time high levels of 12,000, and a lot of investors were already scarred by what happened in the previous three instances and assumed this would lead to another large fall.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><br>\u2026and then came the surprise &#8211; Nifty went up by a whopping 50% and went on to hit new all-time highs!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.fundsindia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/7-1.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Flashback 3: Between 2021 and 2023, Nifty 50 was stuck at 18,000 levels for some time\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fundsindia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Nifty-50-slide-3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"856\" height=\"415\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fundsindia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Nifty-50-slide-3.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28566\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fundsindia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Nifty-50-slide-3.png 856w, https:\/\/www.fundsindia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Nifty-50-slide-3-300x145.png 300w, https:\/\/www.fundsindia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Nifty-50-slide-3-768x372.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 856px) 100vw, 856px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>As seen above, the Nifty 50 between 2021 and 2022 hit all-time high levels (around 18,000 levels) four times in Oct-21, Jan-22, Apr-22 and Dec-22. In all these instances, Nifty 50 fell 10% to 15% after that.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In June-2023, the market again hit the same all-time high level, and a lot of investors were already scarred by what happened in the previous instances and assumed this would lead to another large fall.&nbsp;We also wrote a blog and you can read it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fundsindia.com\/blog\/mf-basics\/investment-definitions\/how-should-you-respond-to-all-time-highs-in-indian-equity-markets\/27364\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>But here is what happened &#8211; Nifty went up 14% to hit a new all-time high!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.fundsindia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Nifty-50-slide-1-.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>After the repeated pattern of \u2018all-time highs followed by a fall\u2019, we are now seeing early signs of the break out happening (similar to the two flashbacks we read above).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To put this into perspective, as seen in the two flashbacks we saw the pattern break out at 6,000 levels with a whopping 73% gains and at 12,000 levels with 50% gains.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the current levels we are still only at 14% gains from previous all time highs!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color:#0b5394\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Insight 3: All-time highs have generally been followed by positive 1Y returns<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For the <strong>last 23+ years<\/strong>, we checked for all the periods where Nifty 50 TRI hit an \u201call-time high\u201d. We then checked the 1-year, 3-year, and 5-year returns following those \u201call-time high\u201d levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fundsindia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Nifty-50-slide-4.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1003\" height=\"511\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fundsindia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Nifty-50-slide-4.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28567\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fundsindia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Nifty-50-slide-4.png 1003w, https:\/\/www.fundsindia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Nifty-50-slide-4-300x153.png 300w, https:\/\/www.fundsindia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Nifty-50-slide-4-768x391.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1003px) 100vw, 1003px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The Nifty 50 TRI gave <strong>positive returns 100% of the time <\/strong>on a<strong> 5-year basis<\/strong> if we had invested during an all-time high.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color:#38761d\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>The average 1Y returns, when invested in Nifty 50 TRI during an all-time high, is ~14%!<\/strong> <\/span>(This gets even better for active funds with 20Y+ existence \u2013 <strong>HDFC Flexi cap fund and Franklin Flexicap fund \u2013 the average 1Y returns were much higher at 17% and 19%)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For Nifty 50 TRI,&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>47% of all-time highs were followed by 1-year returns of more than 15%<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>56% of the times \u2013 the 1Y returns exceeded 12%<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This clearly shows that \u201call-time highs\u201d automatically don\u2019t imply a market fall and in fact, the majority of times, market returns have been strong post an all-time high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong><br><span style=\"color:#0b5394\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Putting all this together<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong><span style=\"color:#38761d\" class=\"has-inline-color\">All-time highs in isolation do not predict market falls and historically investing at all-time highs has led to good short-term return outcomes the majority of the time!<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While there\u2019s no way of knowing what lies ahead in the near term, history shows us that equity markets tend to move higher over the long term in line with earnings growth. New highs are a normal occurrence and don\u2019t necessarily warn of an impending correction. They may in fact signal that further growth lies ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color:#0b5394\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Rather than focusing on &#8220;All Time Highs,&#8221; what should you pay attention to?<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Irrespective of whether the markets are at an all-time high or not, <strong>if the following three conditions occur together, then you should worry about a possible bubble (read as high odds of a large market fall) in the markets and re-evaluate your equity exposure.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">Condition 1: Very Expensive Valuations<\/span><\/strong> (tracked via FundsIndia Valuemeter)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">Condition 2: Late Phase of the Earnings Cycle<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">Condition 3: Euphoric Sentiments in the Market<\/span><\/strong><br>(Strong Inflows from both FII &amp; DIIs, large no of IPOs, high leverage, high new investor participation, very high past returns, new themes collecting large money, etc)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We continuously track the above via our <strong>Three Signal Framework<\/strong> and <strong>Bubble Zone Indicator <\/strong>(which tracks 30+ indicators).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong><br><\/strong><strong>Evaluating the three above conditions, where do we stand now?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol><li><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">\u2018Very Expensive\u2019 Valuations&nbsp;<\/span><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><span style=\"color:#38761d\" class=\"has-inline-color\">\u2018Mid Phase\u2019 of Earnings Cycle<\/span> <\/strong>(and not \u2018late phase\u2019)<\/li><li><strong><span style=\"color:#bf9000\" class=\"has-inline-color\">\u2018Neutral\u2019 Sentiments<\/span> <\/strong>(no signs of \u2018euphoria\u2019)<strong><br><\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Atleast 2 out of the three signals should turn red for our Bubble signal to flash red.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Currently only one signal (valuiation) is in red indicating no usual signs of a bubble. <\/strong>This implies the odds of the current all time high leading to a large temporary market fall (read as 30-60% temporary fall) is low.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are interested in the detailed rationale you can read it in the annexure (included in the end of the blog).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color:#0b5394\" class=\"has-inline-color\">So, what should you do now in your portfolio?<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Maintain your original split between Equity and Debt exposure &nbsp;<\/strong><ul><li>If your <strong>Original Long Term Asset Allocation <\/strong>split is for eg 70% Equity &amp; Improving Asset Quality &amp; pickup in loan growth, Revival in Real Estate, Government&#8217;s focus on Infra spending (which continues in FY24), Early signs of Corporate Capex,&nbsp; Structural Demand for Tech services, Structural Domestic Consumption Story, Consolidation of Market Share for Market Leaders, Strong Corporate Balance Sheets (led by Deleveraging) and Govt Reforms (Lower corporate tax, Labour Reforms, PLI) etc.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Sentiment: <span style=\"color:#bf9000\" class=\"has-inline-color\">\u2018NEUTRAL\u2019<\/span><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a <strong>contrarian indicator<\/strong> and we become positive when sentiments are pessimistic and vice versa.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>DII flows continue to be strong. DII Flows have a structural tailwind in the form of &#8211; Savings moving from Physical to Financial assets, Emerging SIP investment culture and EPFO equity investments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Early Signs of FIIs coming back to Indian Equities after a period of selling<\/strong>. Both FII &amp; DII flows being very high would be a concern.
